Long live the builder team
The future in IT belongs to builders – people who take ownership from problem to solution. The question isn't whether your team will change. It's whether you're ready to be one of them.
I've always been a fan of cross-functional teams with full autonomy to deliver results. A team that includes all the competencies needed to ship value end to end: frontend and backend engineers, QA, product manager, business analyst, designer, and others.
This model worked well because it minimized dependencies. No waiting on external teams, no competing priorities, fewer organizational bottlenecks. Teams moved fast, stayed focused, and owned outcomes.
AI is reshaping how we work – and blurring the lines between roles
Engineers used to be "T-shaped": deep expertise in one area, broad understanding of the rest. Today, AI tooling fills many of those gaps. It expands what every team member can do, making it possible to operate far beyond your original specialization.
People still lean toward certain domains – backend, frontend, design – but the barriers between them are disappearing. There are fewer blockers and fewer excuses for not being able to take a feature from concept to delivery.
So, will AI replace you? Not you – but very likely your current role
Tasks that once required coordination between three specialists now get handled by one person with the right AI tooling. A backend engineer ships a polished UI. A product manager builds a working prototype. Not because they suddenly became experts in those areas – but because AI closed the gap between intention and execution.
Cross-functional teams with clearly separated competencies are gradually becoming teams of builders. The original purpose of cross-functional composition was to eliminate external blockers. AI takes this further by reducing internal blockers too. Specialized competencies are still needed, but their mission is shifting – from executing isolated tasks to building AI-powered frameworks, tooling, and infrastructure that empower everyone on the team to deliver autonomously.
